Hello, I’m Kanako from SUNCHI editorial desk. The longing for the beauty. Beauty care is all time concern for women and the episode of Yang Kuei-fei and Cleopatra have been handed down at this distance of time. The dresser filled with beauty items is always what girls are dreaming of. On this serial article, we are going to introduce our choice selection of seven beauty items, and those backgrounds and how to use them.

The first item is a nail file indispensible for nail care. People in Edo period had already been accustomed to coloring nails by safflower as a grooming. Nowadays numerous nail salons and a nail artist as an occupation exist and the interest for the nail beauty is high as ever. On the other hand, there are few opportunities to learn the daily care, I guess. As for me, usually just trim my nails despite longing for the beauty. What should I keep in mind to get the beauty?

I heard from uka Co., Ltd. and Suwada Blacksmith Works, Inc, with whom Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten made a nail grooming set this fall. Uka operates beauty salons which provide hair and nail care and beauty treatments. Their home care products are popular as well such as fragrance nail oils designed for working women at various scenes in a day. The director, Ms. Kiho Watanabe is a top nail artist. What’s the beautiful nail for the professionals?

Uka’s nail oil named “1716” for “Nail grooming set”. “1716” is the year of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten’s establishment.

It’s the balance that counts.

“What I think the most beautiful nails are trimmed to a good balance in length. First of all, the length of fore, middle and third fingers are the same from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. And the rest fingers are to be nicely balanced to them. In addition, when seeing from the palm, the nail lengths you can see are to be just about the same. The shape is important, too. When each nail has the same shape, it looks balanced and beautiful.”

Ms. Kiho Watanabe, the director of uka. I heard from her at a lecture held in Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, Omotesando branch.

So, what matters seems to make pure nails balanced. I’ve been thinking the nail care as beautifully colored nail. Then maybe I can do it with no trouble. Here is the story of Mr. Saito from Suwada Blacksmith Works, Inc., who made a nail file for the nail grooming set. Speaking of Suwada, their nail scissors in nipper shape are famous and they are back ordered for two years. Nail scissors and a nail file seem close but not the same, though, the two seems to have a same important point.

Suwada’s nail scissors that nail artists from home and abroad use habitually.

The nail file

“The quality as a nail file is off course important and the handle design to fit a hand is important, too, just like nail scissors.”

Suwada Blacksmith Works is in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture. Sanjo is one of the best places for the quality cutting tools in Japan, where smithy have competed with each other since old times. So no wonder their products work great. Their nail scissors have become popular by its extreme sharpness and its curved handle designed to fit fingers and easy to grip.

A nail file of “Nail grooming set” has a weighing handle to naturally sit in a hand with its weight. It’s well looked after that the established firm who are able to make a long seller product would only do. Now that a wide range of nail files in shape, material and price are available. A beginner like me might have to get a quality one for the long use.

How to make pretty nails.

Well, having known about the tools, we’ll need to know how to use them now. I asked Ms. Watanabe again.

“The nail tissue is streaky like celery and in three layers. If it’s filed back and forth like saw, layers will be separated each other. File it in one direction. The trick is to have a fixed point to make it easier.”

Here is the step.

1、Take a nail file between your dominant finger and thumb, and hold it with your middle finger.
2、Place the tip of the nail file on the other hand’s thumb bottom, which is the fixed point.
3、Keeping the position above, apply the tip of a nail to the file in 45 degree.
4、Keep 45 degree and file a nail by moving a file to one direction.
5、Trim the shape of a nail symmetrically.

It’s a little difficult for a while, but once you get used to it you would feel it’s easy just like me.
When you take a file by non dominant hand, it’s easier to move dominant hand instead of moving a file.

Having come this far we have only a very little way to go.

For more beauty, daily care for protection and moisture and furthermore buffing is essential.

Beautiful nail is not built in a day.

“When you do the dishes with hot water, you’d better put gloves. When you type a keyboard, use ball of fingers not nails. A little care will do. For the moisture, the nail oil is good as it contains balanced nutrition. It’s good as well to put face cream after bath. Please moisturize at least five times a day. I recommend you to put a nail color. In three days check how it peeled off to see how you use your finger tips. Nail color and base coat will protect nails somewhat, and you would try to maintain the color your hands’ move will be graceful, which will make you look female.”

Hmm…Even as those seem easy to start with, they all are eye opening for me. It seems a short cut to the nail beauty is by the care with tools and the self daily care at the same time.

“Nail is the keratinized skin and it doesn’t provide nutrition for itself. In addition, nails are at the end of the body and the nutrition will be provided lastly. That’s why nails clearly show your physical condition and your daily care. If you don’t care hair, it will have split ends and shrink. Nail is just like that. The daily care matters.”

The nail of beauty is not built in a day. But it won’t be far distant if the daily care will be kept with fun and a bit of consciousness.
